Ceramic Tile Adhesive
Selecting the correct ceramic tile adhesive or glue for a tiling job is just as important as having the correct tile tools to do the job. There are many different types of ceramic tile adhesive or glue that you can use and your ceramic tile supplier will be able to advise you on the best one for the Job. However, it is best to know the basics so you can make sure you are buying the correct tile adhesive.
What types of tile adhesive are there and what are they for?
Cement Based Tile Adhesive
This type of tile adhesive or glue is used for general tiling on solid concrete or masonry walls and floors. This tile adhesive or glue is generally cheaper than other types of tile adhesive as it is a basic cement based non flexible adhesive. This adhesive should not be used on cracked cement floors or where some movement is expected. It is supplied dry and is mixed with water before being applied.
Modified cement based Tile Adhesive
This tile adhesive often is modified to cope with small amounts of movement. The glue has rubber and polymers in it so that if the sub straight cracks or moves slightly the tile will not crack. Modified cement adhesive can be used both inside and outside and is a great choice for floors. Is supplied dry and is mixed with water to use.
Timber floor Tile Adhesive
This adhesive or glue is a two part glue with strong adhesion and flexibility and is able to handle the small flex of a timber floor. However if your floor has bounce or a lot of flex your tile may crack. It is also best to use a flexible or to add a flexible additive so that your grout does not fall out.

Flexible Internal Tile Adhesive This ceramic tile glue is great for wall tiling as it allows for the small amounts of house movement. This is supplies dry and is mixed with water to use and is an excellent choice for and kitchen walls.
Fast Setting Tile Adhesive
This adhesive or glue is used when the tiles need to be in service quicker than 12 hours. For example: The use of fast cluing glue would allow for ceramic floor tiles to be laid in the morning and 4 hours later could be walked on. Also can be used on walls so the ceramic tiles can be grouted and the bathroom can be completed quicker.
Other Ceramic Tile Adhesive Ceramic tile glue for under floor heating. This glue is able to cope with the heating and cooling without damage.
Ceramic tile glue for swimming pools. Used for ceramic tiles that will be completely under water.

  • It is best not to use premixed tile adhesive: This type of tile adhesive takes longer to set and is generally weaker than dry glue
